Myth: If you shaved your head your hair will grow back differently.

Your hair is not ‘alive’ therefore whatever happens to the hair on your head, the follicle will not ‘know’. Therefore your hair will grow back exactly as it did before!

Myth: The more you shave the faster the hair will grow.

Again since the hair is not “living” it doesn’t know it has been cut and so it will simply re-grow at the rate it did before. The biggest influence on how fast or thick the hair is, is your age. Generally as you get older your facial hair will be thicker and grow faster.

Myth: If you pluck hairs more will grow back in their place.

Again reading the two above myths should prove that your hair is going to grow back exactly as it did before – there will be no difference.

Myth: Wearing tight hats causes you to go bald.

A complete myth! The hat would have to be so tight that it cut off the blood supply to your head!

Firstly be Nice! If you are pleasant to your barber or stylist then they are more likely to pay more attention to what they are doing and to take their time. It is usually the detail that completes a haircut – therefore being pleasant will encourage them to finish the haircut off to their best ability.

Following on from this is a good idea to go to the barbers or stylists during the middle of the day. As with any line of work, people are often want to get home at the end of the day, and haven’t quite woken up yet in the morning!

If you want a specific style I recommend that you bring a photograph with you. Although remember they aren’t magicians! You must be realistic with what kind of haircut to get. It is the stylist’s job to produce great haircuts – they will know what hairstyles will look go on certain people – their opinion is the best you can get.

Gels

The most obvious product is gels, which have been a male styling products for years. Some of the cheaper products can flake and come away from the hair, so buy the most expensive ones. Usually gels come in 2 varieties strong and weak strength. If your hair is quite thin using a strong gel will flatten it. Similarly using a weak gel on thick hair will not hold it in position.

Waxes

Recently ‘waxes’ have come into the market and although similar to gels the wax will still hold the hair in place but will also add a shine to it. Since waxes are usually made will oil the wax must be applied to dry hair. The wax should be washed out at night.

Creams

For men with thin hair an alternative to waxes is creams that offer the same properties as waxes but are not so thick and heavy. When applying the cream put a small amount on your hands and rub them together. You can then apply the product to your hair.
